Why study in the UK?
Once upon a time, the sun never set on the British Empire – its political empire extended far and wide! Its pupil who had studied at Oxford and Cambridge fueled and furthered British imperialism. Britain of today, is known for its fish and chips; the London Eye, its musicians – Beetles, Pink Floyd and Rolling Stones. No longer a sprawling empire, but British education system is still a force to reckon with.
Oxford University, with over 90 Nobel Laureates, has got the award maximum number of times. Cambridge is not too far behind! Political Science – you cannot learn it better elsewhere. British education system in political science is the forbearer of a rich legend of political evangelists and its best to learn the subject at the seat of its origin. The same can be said for Law, Music, Psychology, Sciences and to a smaller extent –Engineering and MBA. United Kingdom has universities occupying slots in the top ten in each of the above discipline.
UK has one of the highest rates of mortality on account of depression. Bad weather is to be blamed – for sure! However, that has led to a proliferation of psychology related courses across the country. University College London, King’s College, University of St Andrews, University of Bath are some of the places which are known for their top-notch courses in psychology across the world.
Musical traditions have a long history in the UK. Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, the Oxford University, Guildhall School of Music and Drama are some of the best places to take the most sought after education in music.
UAH, one of the leading UK Study Consultants in India, believes that UK education system is fundamentally for puritans. Driven by rich historical traditions and industrial revolution, the foundational work in the disciplines of Law, Political Science, Psychology, Sciences and Music has happened in the UK. It continues to be a seat of excellence across these disciplines. If you were to choose the UK for study of these subjects, you would get deep subject matter knowledge and will be exposed to the rich heritage, which only the British education system can provide. However, the UK lacks in applied disciplines such as Engineering and MBA. While there are a few good schools, the program quality and student intake is not as great as for the other subjects as above.

Cost of Studying in the UK
Cost of studying in the UK is on the higher side. In fact, especially for international students, Britain is one of the more expensive places to study. Not just the tuition, the cost of living also tends to be high leading to overall high costs of study in the UK.
Our study abroad counselors have seen students pay typically in the range of 50K – 60K USD every year roughly split equally between tuition and other living costs.
Admission Guidelines and Process
UK admission process is fundamentally different from the US system. A lot of former English colonies like India, Indonesia, Singapore, etc. still have elements of that system and thus students from these countries would find ‘familiarity’ in the education system in the UK and may find it easy to adjust there.
UK has a more focused approach to its programs and encourages deeper subject studies (as opposed to the US which focused a lot of breadth and cross-disciplinary studies). Hence the program duration tends to be smaller – undergraduate programs are for 3 years, Masters at 1 year and PhD take around 3-4 years to complete. People are also more affiliated to the college that they get into and university is more like an umbrella organization with little to no interference in the matters of the college. UK still largely follows the conventional education system with focus on written work, end-semester exams and the pedagogy is largely lecture based with focus on research and thesis work.
Therefore it is imperative that you know what you want to study beforehand. Unlike the US, where you get into a university and then figure out your interests and dabble across a range of disciplines, in here, you tend to be focused and more decisive in your approach. The studies in the UK are designed for people who want to gain specialized knowledge in their discipline and are geared to get you a much more nuanced understanding of the subject.
Colleges encourage prospective students to apply early. However, many accept applications till March/ April for the fall entry. The good ones have their application dates by January/ February preceding the fall entry.
That apart, the admission process is fairly straightforward –
In general, you would need to fill in an online application and submit the following documents –
- Statement of Objective (SOP)
- CV
- Letters of Reference (usually 2; 1 academic and 1 non-academic)
- Transcripts, etc.
- Scores of General tests like SAT, GRE, GMAT, etc. if applicable
- English proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, if applicable
There might be some program specific criterion as well that you may have to meet in addition to the above points.
