Set up in an international setting, with opportunities to spend time at more than one campus and focus on getting entry level management jobs, MIM programs are a right fit for all students who want to jump-start their management career and are not keen to wait-out 4-5 years that are needed for an MBA

MIM programs are reasonably priced - some costing well under Rs. 20 lacs (including living expenses) to suit the pocket of fresh graduates. Almost all of them accept students with 3 year undergraduate program and offer an opportunity to become a global professional. Most of the top MiM programs are based out of Europe and therefore allow you to be a part of a large economic block. The programs are extremely sought after in the industry and the MiM graduates end up earning average salaries close to 100,000 $.

Options after such a program are many and varied. Since in most jurisdictions, a Masters does not allow you to pursue ‘clinical practice’, and also because of the intrinsic interest in the discipline, a vast majority tend to pursue a PhD right after their Masters. However, this number is falling and Psychology graduates are increasingly being sought in employment opportunities in a range of industries – medicine and counselling, design, consulting and industrial systems.

Program Details and Cost Analysis Benefit of MIM course from Top 10 Universities

MIM Programs have gotten immensely popular over the last decade. Fresh graduates from colleges and universities who are looking to get comprehensive business education find MIM to be an attractive option. A European phenomenon earlier, increasingly many MIM programs are being offered in US, Canada, Australia and places in Asia like Singapore and Hong Kong.

While there is no question about the utility and the value of these programs, the cost-benefit equation is not uniformly clear. Here, we offer an objective assessment. (All prices are in INR for easy comparison and include not just the academic costs but also the living costs of the program. We have used 1 Euro = 81 Rs. 1 Pound = 94 Rs. 1SGD = Rs. 50 and 1 $ = 66 Rs.) We have taken the top MIM programs from the world. However, since the list was predominantly European, we have updated it to include schools from US, Canada and Asia as well.

In our analysis of the top MiM programs across the world, some interesting insights that emerge-

  1. Multi Campus Schools like Grenoble, Edhec, ESCP-EAP, CEMS are extremely popular driven by their industry partnerships and multi-campus (sometimes, multi-country) exposure. They are usually the first choice of prospective students.
  2. France is the number one destination for prospective MiM students. With maximum number of schools in top 20, Grand Ecole programs at places like HEC and significant local competition, many schools like ESCP, HEC, Grenoble, Edhec are making the cut into the top programs.
  3. Central Europe with its rich industrial base, and MiM programs like WHU, St, Gallen and Bocconi are emerging a very popular destination. Most students tend to visit another European country during the program as well.
  4. UK, a late starter in the MiM band-wagon has failed to capture the imagination of students. Driven by its strict visa policy, more recent Brexit, despite places like LBS and Imperial, UK is not a very popular MiM destination for students.
  5. Spain has got two very good schools - Esade and IE business school which have a strong educational pedagogy and international acceptability. Apart from these two, and given the overall economic situation in Spain, there are no other great opportunities to pursue there.
  6. Most US MiM programs are pretty recent. However, driven by its rich educational legacy and the already-established MBA programs, MiM programs are gaining in strength and are expected to give competition to their European peers very soon. However, these programs tend to be slightly more expensive than their European counterparts.

HEC costs might seem extremely high at first ~ Rs. 47 lacs (about 30 lacs of tuition and the rest living expenses.) However, if we take into account the average scholarships that the students get at HEC, along with the option to take a gap year of study where you can earn and gain professional experience at the same time, this cost comes down drastically to about Rs. 25 lacs.

The average starting salary of an HEC MIM graduate is about Rs. 46 lacs. Assuming that about 20% of this is used to pay back the loan taken to finance the MIM study, you pay back the entire loan in 4.2 years if you do your MIM in 2 years and in 2.7 years if you take a gap year between your MIM studies.

Unquestionably SIM (Master of Arts in Strategy and International Management) is the undisputed kind of the MIM programs. Ranked at the top of the pile consistently for the last 7 years, and one of the most selective MIM programs, SIM is the most sought after MIM programs. SIM takes three semesters to complete and while the tuition cost is extremely reasonable at about Rs. 7 lacs for the entire program, the cost of living in St Gallen makes the total costs for the three semester option go up to Rs. 25 lacs. Should you do part-time work in the interim, it can come down further. The average salaries of SIM graduates are highest in the industry @ about Rs. 75 lacs and thus if you finance your studies through loans, you can pay them back within 18 months. 

Should you choose to a double degree and get a CEMS Masters as well, you will spend an additional semester, and your total costs increase by another 6 lacs Rupees. The payback in that case goes up to 2 years under the same set of assumptions. However SIM, by itself is extremely known and a popular degree - students who get in there, usually get out after 3 semesters!

The total cost of the program (after scholarships and financial aid provisions) is about Rs. 31 lacs, of which 33% is the living expense. The graduates can expect to earn an average of Rs. 33 lacs as starting salary in an international setting. And if were to provide for the payment of the cost of the program by setting aside 20% of the salary every month, we get a pay-back period of 4.7 years - just right from the perspective of a subsequent MBA.

LBS is one of the more expensive MIM programs - partly driven by extremely high cost of living in the city of London. A four term option for MIM at LBS can cost upto Rs. 60 lacs and of that, a whopping Rs. 21 lacs is the living cost. The more prevalent three term option costs about Rs. 49 lacs and include living costs of about 17 lacs Rs. 

People tend to choose the shorter 12 month format and finish off their MIM quickly. The starting salaries for MIM graduates are attractive, at about RS. 47 lacs/ year. You have an option to defray your costs a little further by getting into a short internship in the summer and getting some of the many scholarships available at LBS. If you were to do that, your total costs come down to Rs. 38 lacs. Should you take a loan to finance it, you will have a pay-back period of 4 years - just about when you are getting ready for your next degree, perhaps a specialized MBA. The longer 16 month MIM option has a pay-back period of 5 years.

Typical cost of these programs is about Rs. 35 lacs of which 33% is the living expense. You also have the option of defraying some of these expenses through part-time jobs and research opportunities at the campus. An average graduate can expect to get about Rs. 55 lacs in salary and if he was to use 20% of that to pay for his program expense, he should take about 2.6 years to pay back the entire amount.

WHU Beisheim offers one of the top MIM programs in Germany. Apart from the strong industrial roots driven by the local German ecosystem, WHU Beisheim offers one of the most economical program. The net costs (living, medical and tuition - all inclusive) after accounting for extensive scholarships and internship earnings are about Rs. 21 lacs for the 17 month program and rise to 26 lacs for the 21 month stint. 

Given the fact that WHU graduates earn one of the highest salaries (~ Rs. 65 lacs) and often are absorbed in the local work-force (a knowledge of German is a must. Most learn the language during their stay at WHU), the payback period for loans under our standard assumptions (20% payout every year) is 1.3 years for the shorter 17 month track and 1.7 years for the longer track.

ESADE MIM turns out to be fairly reasonable, much cheaper than its sister program at IE business school. MIM total cost is around Rs. 27 lacs with about 33% attributed to living expenses. A dual degree like an CEMS MIM or many other dual options that are available (both internally or externally) cost around Rs 40 lacs and take about 18-24 months to complete. Despite this, the salary statistics are very impressive - a whopping Rs. 50 lacs for the MIM graduates giving a pay-back under the standard conditions of this model (20% of salary goes towards servicing the program cost) of 2.3 years! Unquestionably, it is one of the more popular programs, especially among the Indian students.

Babson's MIM programs, similar to most US MIM programs are of more recent vintage with the first class from their MSEL program graduating in 2015. They also have similar programs in Finance and Accounting, but the program in Entrepreneurship (MSEL) is by far the most popular. 

Babson's program costs about Rs. 50 lacs (all inclusive) for the nine month stint at the flagship campus at Wellesley in the state of Massachusetts. The costs are a little high given the moderate rank of the Babson College, however, given its easier accessibility, a lot of people are keen to attend the program at this cost as well. Being a part of the greater Cambridge/ Massachusetts educational ecosystem with universities like MIT, Harvard and Tufts nearby gives this program ready credibility and students' great exposure. The average salary of the outgoing graduates is about Rs. 42 lacs. Given the very recent introduction of this program, we expect this to go up, as the program takes roots. The pay-back period, under the conditions that 20% of the salary is used to pay for the loans to finance the program, is 5.9 years.

Priced at about Rs. 33 lacs with close to 50% as living expenses, this nine month program has high employability outcomes. The average salary of the graduates of the program is close to Rs. 24 lacs and offers temporary and permanent work permit in a multi-polar country like Canada. Should you choose to finance your studies through a loan, at 20% of your salary, it will take you seven years to pay it back.

Cost Benefit Analysis 

NUS offers one of the best MIM programs in the Asian subcontinent. Apart from its competitive costs, international location with robust regional influence (Singapore) and a strong emerging market orientation, through global partnership with CEMS, it offers one of the top MIM programs in the world. 

The standard version takes one year to complete and costs around 14 lac Rs. (Yes!) (All inclusive, net of scholarships and income from internships) The CEMS version, on the other hand costs about 2.5 times at Rs. 32 lacs. Bulk of this cost is driven by the CEMS component and the cost of living in the mostly European CEMS partner universities. However, the acceptability of the standard MIM program is high and gives you a salary of close to 49 lacs/ annum, marginally lower than then CEMS MIM at 53 lacs. The attractive Salary/cost ratio gives an attractive pay-back of loan (taken to finance the MIM) at 1.4 years as opposed to 3 years for the CEMS MIM. (The calculations are made like above - assuming 20% of the salary goes in servicing the loan) 

Given the attractive cost-benefit equation for the standard one year MIM, a lot of students choose to opt for that as well, notwithstanding the CEMS credentials and the presence of the alternative program.
