Why study in Singapore?

Singapore is the business capital of Asia-Pacific in the truest sense. Seat of one of the busiest trading routes, geographically situated at the cusp of about 40% of the global GDP, home to one of the most diverse populace, and housing HQs of most of the APAC businesses, Singapore offers one of the most conducive environments to do and learn business in APAC.

UAH, one of the leading Singapore education consultants based in Delhi and Gurgaon, believes that Singapore is one of the finest destinations for education in business and related matters. Given the trade importance of Singapore and the fact that it houses many company headquarters in the APAC, the business education is supplemented by extensive availability of internships and jobs across a variety of sectors for the graduates that come out of the country’s schools.

Singapore is the Asian multi-cultural hub and as such offers great opportunities to learn and live across diverse cultural settings. Truly a global, egalitarian society, Singapore graduates find it easy to acclimatize and drive leadership roles across a variety of global firms and as such are in great demand!

Singapore is such a fantastic destination for higher studies, that INSEAD opened its first campus outside France in Singapore in the Buona Vista district way back in the year 2000. And now many participants prefer Singapore campus over the original European campus primarily because of the destination, Singapore. Since INSEAD, many other colleges have established their Asian campuses in Singapore – Yale, ESSEC, SP Jain, MIT and along with China’s Zhejiang University started Singapore University of Technology and Design, Duke, Wharton – and many others have established their presence in Singapore and offer multiple programs through their Singapore campuses.

Another testimony to the multi-cultural city-state of Singapore is the LASALLE College of the Arts. Undoubtedly, one of the most progressive Art schools in the world, LASALLE has become a magnet for art students from across the world. In the words of an article from Aoife Moriarty: “A partner institution of Goldsmiths in London, LASALLE has become one of the leading arts institutions in Asia since it was founded three decades ago.”

Many Asian students prefer Singapore because of its proximity to their home base and familiarity with a setting that incorporates elements from home. However, Singapore is more than that. The best governed city-state in the world throws out a lesson or two in Public Policy and government as well over and above its well established courses in business.

Singapore has been indelibly established in the education landscape of the world and especially so for Asian students – who find familiarity and a bridge to connect their home-grown values and the global landscape of doing business

Cost of Studying in Singapore

Cost of studying in Singapore is high compared to Asian standards. However, these costs are lower than the corresponding Australian, UK or US benchmarks. However there are a slew of scholarships which are available and also Ministry of Education grants which makes it cheaper. Singapore also offers a variety of double degree programs – so if you count cost per degree, it is way cheaper than any other place! Some of the double degree programs are listed as under –

NUS benchmarks for tuition and living costs are given as under –

 Tuition: USD 21,000/ year

Tuition (with MOE subsidy): USD 14,000/ year

 Living Expenses: USD 7000/ year

Cost of studying at Singapore can be as low as USD 20,000 per year – less than half of what you would pay in the US and virtually at par with many other universities and colleges at your home. The catch with the Ministry of Education grant/ subsidy is that you have to sign a bond and have to work in Singapore for 3 years.

There are a variety of scholarships which are available so this cost could potentially reduce further. Plus, Singapore is a multi-cultural society in the truest sense. Our study abroad counsellors have reported best acceptance rates in terms of students adjusting to the environment across all major geographies.

Admission Guidelines and Process

Singapore’s value proposition is based on global, world class education in a familiar setting in Asia. Hence it attracts a lot of Asian and APAC students and also those students from Europe and US who want to study and work in emerging markets.

Competition to get in the best universities at Singapore is fierce and can be extremely demanding. Singapore colleges often accept scores from home boards/ colleges and provide straight admission and scholarships on that basis. However, most international candidates choose to take one of the standard exams like SAT/ ACT or GRE and GMAT along with English proficiency exams like IELTS and TOEFL to gain admission at colleges in Singapore.

The deadlines are much more flexible than the corresponding universities in the US. Dates for application are often aligned with the results of Asian examinations and stretch as far as March/ June for August/September start. This gives you more time to build your application. That apart, the admission process is fairly straightforward –

You would need to fill in an online application and submit the following documents –

  1. Statement of Objective (SOP)
  2. CV
  3. Letters of Reference (usually 2; 1 academic and 1 non-academic)
  4. Transcripts, etc.
  5. Scores of General tests like SAT, GRE, GMAT, etc. if applicable
  6. English proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, if applicable

Singapore has built a slew of specialized programs
