You might wonder, while writing your CV, “How can I fit all my details and accomplishments into a single page?”

The aim of the Resume is to create a snapshot of you, the Candidate. It should be short and compelling, as we discussed here. Here is how it could be structured.

How to create a college resume and what you can write in it:

  • Heading
Your name comes first. It should be in a clear font, in a simple easy to read format. It should suit your personality. Too much designing, and the reader decides you are frivolous. No customization, and the reader decides that you do not care. The trick is to care “enough” so that you can strike a balance between appearance and content.
  • Academic profile
The academic profile is a snapshot of your academic journey. If you are a mathematics major, put that there, along with supporting thoughts like an interest in robotics and a 4 year membership of the school debate team. The academic profile should ideally contain your major - or rather what you plan to study (the purpose of the college resume). Number of words - upto 50.
  • Scores
It’s a fact that ACT SAT scores are debatable these days. What with the exams being cancelled, re-planned, and covid-uncertainty (covtainty?), one is led to believe that the scores do not hold importance anymore. The fact remains that as long as the scores exist, a college will look at them for ascertaining a certain academic calibre. The difference that has come about is that, added to the scores, other factors have gained greater importance in a more holistic approach to admissions.
  • Co-curriculars & Extra Curricular Activities
These definitely require special mention because they are visible proof of your super-capabilities. The purpose is to create the picture of a student who has a holistic approach to learning. This is where the rest of learning styles and intelligences can be showcased. Moreover, keeping the fact that the college resume has to be a snapshot of your identity, this segment should be short, bullet points - to the point.
  • Employment, Experience, Internships, Projects
Essential to your profile, this segment should share in a few points the highlights of your experience. If there is a project which helped you discover your new passion, for example, do mention it here. Elaborate on it further in the essays or short questions.
  • Skills
This is a neat little chart which delivers, in very few pixels, a large and critical amount of data about your prowess. What you choose to put here is again your choice. It’s a good idea to tailor this segment according to the course you are applying for.
  • Recognition and Awards
A most important segment. In an effort to paint a shiny picture, you might be tempted to list out all achievements so far. Remember again, this is a snapshot. Write here about those awards which are relevant to the application. As yourself, “Will this mention of a Calligraphy award increase my chances of admission in this science course?” Stick to the relevant arguments only!
  • Hobbies
A one liner at the bottom of the page could cover in  a few words all your other interests which make you you. Right from manga, to baking, sourdough to pastry, impressionism to existentialism, piano to the saxophone, everything is up for grabs here.

Last, but not the least, research your intended school. Customise your college resume to project the most relevant aspects of your profile so that it fits your intended course at a glance, in a way that it becomes a concise yet accurate snapshot. Here are some general guidelines that will help you finetune the resume. And here is a template that might help you. All the best!
